Science at the Lakes

.

Yesterday, 17 August, was Science at the Lakes. Basically 1300 students from several schools around Adelaide came to UniSA Mawson Lakes campus to visit the event, as part of the National Science Week. UniSA ML hosted the event. I volunteered to help out the day (as the Event Coordinator (EC) for this event needed anyone as a volunteer, not necessarily people with Science knowledge). Volunteers are just to help out on the day, taking a specific group of students around the campus to their presentation, or volunteers being at the Information Kiosk directing people around... Penny, the EC, saw my signature as being an EC myself for my club, decided to ask me whether I would be willing to help out in the Mission Control hub. Basically the mission control is the control of all the volunteers and any queries goes there. Being a volunteer, I decided why not.
Reached there 8:30am.. for briefing. But I was special; being in the mission control hub, i didn't need any briefing like the rest of the volunteers. I was sent up to the 'control tower' & i found myself with 40 2-way radios, 2 ice cooler boxes, 2 folders (one with my name on it) and the day's activities and schools. I was the only volunteer to be in the mission control hub with another staff there. But she hasn't arrived yet. 10 mins later, the volunteers started coming into the hub; apparently their briefing had ended and were sent up to collect their 2-way radios.. So they can use the radios anywhere around the campus & radio into the control hub. Cool hey? hmm, i was stressing at this point, not knowing how the radios work and I was there with a bunch of volunteers waiting for my advice (which I HAD NO idea myself too)... =.=''
Anyways... i got help with the radio and how it works.. Soon most of hte volunteers are sent out to do their job.. Pretty soon, I was receiving quite alot of queries to the Mission Control hub.. asking which school is arriving soon and so forth. I was like "arr!! where..where.. the entire list is in front of me but the buses were arriving soon"
I had fun using the 2 way radios, but it was abit daunting for me, as I had no idea the "correct" answers to give the other person on the other line when everyone who has the radio can heard every single conversations. It was mostly the beginning 9am - 10:30am when the radio-ing was occurring the most, as volunteers were asking where are their school group coming or where is the presenter or 2 girls alone w/o a teacher.. lol.. No major hiccups for the day, which was a big relief. St johns ambulance was on duty the whole day, juz in case anything happened, but some kid did manage to find a syringe on the bushes near the MC building, which was the central hub.
I got a free T-Shirt (the logo the same as the above pic) and free juice, water + lunch on the day. It was cool :) A few of my classmates were volunteers as well + i saw my group of students whom I will be teaching in Term 4 S&E...they seem to be pretty nice kids; and I saw their Science teacher as well. She's pretty nice; i wish i had her as my mentor teacher :P But not in Science, but in my learning area. So I told Glenn, my classmate and also under her guidance (she is his ment0r), that he's lucky to have her as his mentor.
Anyways, it was such a good experience, although I felt I didn't do much on the day, being 'relied on' for information/instructions...... LOL .... the volunteers were coming to me for instructions etc... I'm just as much as a volunteer as them, but my role is different from theirs. I was stressed the whole day that when i came home, i slept for a couple of hours (due to my mum waking me up for dinner) and then after dinner, i went to sleep and then woke up at 2am and then I went back to sleep again until this morning. hahaha, i definitely did catch up on my sleep!
Speaking of sleep, i'm gonna get some now..... Gd nites!!
